About

PRINCETON UNIVERSITY

The renovation of the Julis Romo Rabinowitz Building and the Louis A. Simpson International Building (formerly 20 Washington Road) repurposed 200,000 square feet of space to bring together academic and administrative areas.

The project divided the space into two complementary zones, each with a distinct architectural identity.

Extensive interior renovations preserved the historic character of the exterior and key interior spaces, while LITEFLAM XT60 was integrated into the light wells to usher natural light deep into the structure—all while meeting strict fire code requirements.

PROJECT CHALLENGES

Preserving History While Meeting Modern Fire Safety Standards

  • Balancing historic preservation with modern fire code standards.
  • Integrating a fire-rated glazing system into existing light wells.
  • Dividing the large interior space into two complementary areas with distinct identities.
  • Ensuring natural light penetrates deep within the renovated structure without compromising safety.

Project SOLUTION

LITEFLAM XT60 Enhances Light Wells with Fire-Rated Safety

  • Utilized the LITEFLAM XT60 system to provide an interior, 1‑hr fire‑rated glass light well.
  • Extensively renovated the interior while maintaining the historic character of the exterior.
  • Engineered the light wells to channel natural light into deep, previously underlit areas.
  • Coordinated design efforts to successfully merge academic and administrative functions.
PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS

Princeton’s Renovation Blends Heritage and Modern Functionality

  • Successfully integrated modern, fire‑rated glazing technology into a historic building.
  • Enhanced natural lighting throughout the structure while meeting stringent fire codes.
  • Created two distinct, yet complementary, architectural areas within a unified space.
  • Delivered a repurposed facility that effectively serves both academic and administrative needs.
